Course Information

Location:

Salty HQ, Cowes (A short walk from transport links)
Town Quay Marina, Southampton

Duration:

5 Days

Pre Requisits:

Basic sailing ability
5 days, 100 miles and 4 night hours onboard a sailing yacht
Navigation and theory knowledge to Day Skipper Shorebased level
Minimum age 16 (Must be accompanied by an adult if under 18)

What is Covered:

Theory (Shorebased Module)

Chartwork, navigation, compass variation & deviation
Tides, tidal heights, and streams
Passage planning & pilotage
Collision regulations (COLREGs)
Weather and forecasting
Safety and emergency procedures
Buoyage, lights, and shapes

Practical

Sail handling, reefing, and trimming
Mooring, anchoring, and manoeuvring under power
Navigation and pilotage afloat
Passage planning and execution as skipper
Safety drills, including man overboard recovery
Skippering techniques, crew leadership & decision-making

What's Included:

RYA Instructor
Shared accommodation on board during the practical element (only same gender cabin sharing)
If you do not wish to stay on board please let us know and we can advise you on whether or not we will likely be returning to Cowes
Food when on board only
Safety equipment, including lifejackets
Home berthing fees
Boat running costs

Not Included:

Dinner when ashore
Clothing - Wet weather gear can be hired for £30 for the week
Travel
Personal Insurance
Berthing fees when away from home berth

Certificate valid for:

The Day Skipper theorycertificate does not expire
The Day Skipper practical certificate does not expire
The RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification can be used to obtain an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) by sending the certificate to the RYA with an application form.
