RYA Day Skipper

Skippering a yacht for the first time can be an intimidating experience, with our skilled instructor you are in safe hands to be taken through the techniques required for becoming a skipper. 

​

The RYA Day Skipper practical course is designed to teach you to take control safely and confidently. Throughout this course you will learn vital skills including passage planning, engine maintenance, close quarters boat handling, safety drills and weather forecasting. These will give you the skills and confidence required to take on the role of skipper.

Course Information

Location:

  • Salty HQ, Cowes (A short walk from transport links)

  • Town Quay Marina, Southampton

Duration:

  • 5 Days

Pre Requisits:

  • Basic sailing ability

  • 5 days, 100 miles and 4 night hours onboard a sailing yacht

  • Navigation and theory knowledge to Day Skipper Shorebased level

  • Minimum age 16 (Must be accompanied by an adult if under 18)

What is Covered:

  • Preparation for sea

  • Deck work

  • Navigation

  • Pilotage

  • Meteorology

  • Rules of the road

  • Maintenance and repair work

  • Engines

  • Victualling

  • Emergency situations

  • Yacht handling under power

  • Yacht handling under sail

  • Passage making

  • Night cruising

What's Included:

  • RYA Instructor

  • Shared accommodation on board (only same gender cabin sharing) 

  • If you do not wish to stay on board please let us know and we can advise you on whether or not we will likely be returning to Cowes

  • Food when on board

  • Safety equipment, including lifejackets

  • Home berthing fees 

  • Boat running costs

Not Included:

Certificate valid for: 

  • The Day Skipper certificate does not expire

  • The RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification can be used to obtain an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) by sending the certificate to the RYA with an application form.
